Africa’s largest airline, Ethiopian Airlines, is expanding its presence in France by adding Lyon to its network after Paris and Marseille. However, due to low passenger demand on the Addis Ababa–Lyon route, the flights will be operated via Geneva, Switzerland.
The distance between Geneva and Lyon is only 98 kilometers. According to Cirium data, this very short sector will be flown in 45 minutes using a widebody Airbus A350. As a result, Ethiopian Airlines will operate the shortest widebody flight in Europe.
The previous record in this category also belonged to Ethiopian Airlines, with its Milan Malpensa–Zurich service covering a distance of 198 kilometers. The new Lyon flight stands out as it is nearly half that distance.
